Did you know that the average Canadian lives in 1,792 square feet? Canada is ranked 3rd on the list of average home size out of the 9 major global countries. Toronto residents likely look at that number and think to themselves, “Wow, that is a lot bigger than my house or my condo”. Especially the owner of Toronto’s tiniest home. If you haven’t ever heard of Toronto’s tiniest home, referred to as The Little House, located near Dufferin and Rogers Road, buckle up.
Back in January of 2008, the home gained a lot of attention when Ellen DeGeneres did a segment on the Ellen Show featuring the house as it was on the Toronto real estate market! Ellen called the Toronto realtor and discussed the property on national TV, which was listed back then at $173,00!
The tiny piece of land was originally a laneway to provide access for the houses on either side. The curbs were never lowered to allow access to vehicles and the gap was deemed useless. A gentleman by the name of Arthur Weeden then jumped at the opportunity to snatch the 7.25 foot lot and build a tiny home. Weeden went on to build several other projects in this area of Toronto and was known as one of the pioneer builders in that neighbourhood. The tiny home resides on Day Avenue, which is in fact still home to some of Weeden’s other projects.
The tiny house was built in 1912 and is a total of 300 square feet. The gentleman that built the home lived in it for 20 years with his loving wife and another 6 after she passed. After the original owner moved out, a family from Brazil moved in. A family with 2 children and they lived there for 10 years. Home is where the heart is after all.
The tiny bungalow features an open concept. The main floor has a living room, kitchen along with a small sleeping area that includes Murphy bed (as the home is too small to fit a normal sized bed). There is also a hatch in the kitchen that goes into a tiny basement. The house feels quite spacious considering the fact it is only 300 square feet and features a tiny backyard, something you don’t get with condo living.
