Happy Pride Month y’all! I am incredibly grateful to live in an inclusive, diverse city. Toronto has established a vibrant culture that welcomes and includes the LGBTQ+ community. The city has implemented anti-discrimination measures and protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, is home to one of the largest Pride celebrations in the world and offers a wide range of resources and support networks. Now that I have kids of my own, it brings me great comfort to know that they will grow up in a place where they don’t fear being themselves.
Most of you here already know me. For those who don’t, my name is Danielle Demerino, and I’ve been a Toronto real estate agent for over 15 years. I have seen the city grow in many ways during my time as a Toronto realtor, and I recently learned about something called the Bohemian Gay Index. Have you ever heard of it?
If not, let me tell you about it!
What is the Bohemian Gay Index?
The Bohemian Gay Index is a ranking system that measures a city’s acceptance and celebration of LGBTQ+ culture, arts and activism. The index takes into account factors such as the number of LGBTQ+ events, organizations, the presence of queer-owned businesses and the legal protections and rights afforded to LGBTQ+ individuals. Cities that score high on the Bohemian Gay Index tend to be vibrant, creative, diverse and have a strong sense of community among LGBTQ+ residents.
The Bohemian Gay Index and Real Estate
Here’s another interesting fact! Cities that rate high on this index also seem to have higher-valued homes. Neighbourhoods that have a higher concentration of protection for LGBTQ+ communities and businesses tend to appreciate faster.

So if you’re gay and moving into a new neighbourhood, make sure your neighbours thank you! If you are looking for a neighbourhood where property values are going up, look for one that promotes inclusivity.
